My name is Jodie, but everyone calls me Jesse… you, know, for ‘Jesse Jane’s.’ I’ve always lived in Maine, not far from the ocean and right now I’m just outside Portland. I love Maine in the spring, and the really warm weather is on its way soon. I have several wholesale accounts around the state as well as other parts of the country. I also picked up my first wholesale account in Australia a few weeks ago. In fact, a lot of my Scrabble Tile Pendants make their way to Australia. I should probably get a world map and chart all the various countries my pendants have been shipped to. It would be fun to see. I know I’ve shipped all over the world.
What first made you become an artist?
I’ve been creating since I was about 10 years old when I started my first craft show business. I created a line of refrigerator magnets and I would make between $50 and $100 each weekend. It was big business for me! I’ve always had some sort of craft business ever since.
What inspires you, prompts your creations?
I love cartoons and cartoon-like graphics are my favorite to create. I love the owls and birds, and anything kind of cutsie. I’m all about color, so I have to have colorful images in my creations.
Please describe your creative process, how, when, where, material, ect.
My creative process begins at the computer with my graphic software. I create an image that I like, or find an image I want to use and size it for my scrabble tiles. Once the images are printed, I go about the first stage of gluing the image, then the image is filed around the edges and glaze is applied. After they’ve dried, I apply a final coat of glaze and the tiles sit overnight to harden. The next morning, a silver bail is attached to the back of the tile and it’s ready to ship.
I package the pendants in small organza gift bags and I use colorful scrapbooking paper to make my own shipping envelopes. They are unique to Jesse Janes and it’s exciting for someone to receive a colorful package in the mail.
Green initiatives, if any.
As for green initiatives, I have a couple. First, I use only recycled Scrabble game tiles for my pendant bases. I will also recycle padded envelopes for packaging when I can.
